The Kawatiri crew decided to focus on youth so we conducted a survey that went around all three main high schools in the Buller region. From this, we found that not many young people in our community thought of this place as a place they would return to for work or a future career.
On the back of what we had learnt, we decided to run the ‘Inspo Expo’ event. We thought that the youth needed to be exposed the different industries that are growing in our community and that you don’t always have to fit into a careers but in fact make your own.
Those who attended said they seen great value in the event and they thought it would be great if something similar was compulsory for all schools in Kawatiri.
My life is abstract, my connection with my chosen surrounding environment has allowed me to taste the dream. It’s the dream of a life emerged within nature, living as creatures of this planet should.
Through natural recreation, is balance – being entertained and content within what your surrounding landscape inspires you to do. So content with natural entertainment to living off the land. I love dwelling in the corners of this beautiful land we call Aotearoa.
I’m bursting with inspiration on how I can influence people’s lives, from embedding emotion into landscapes and ultimately altering the perspectives modern humans have upon environment.
I am 22 years old, and grew up just out of Westport, a small town on the West Coast of the South Island. I have been away to study for three years, living in Christchurch and studying at Lincoln University towards a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management.
Sport and the outdoors have always been my passion and this is why I love the West Coast so much and have found myself back in my home town working within the community sport area.
I love making sport opportunities more accessible for everybody and increasing participation. I also love the outdoor recreation scene and the West Coast has an amazing backdrop full of crazy adventurous playgrounds ready to be explored. I love to ski and surf and play lots of team sports including netball, basketball, futsal, and ultimate Frisbee.
My name is Georgia Wilkinson, I grew up in a tiny settlement called Karamea on the West Coast of the South Island. I am 25 years old and I am now living back on the Coast after moving away to various ‘big smokes’ when I finished school. I am currently completing a degree in Social Work by distance and I also work for a non-profit community organisation as the co-ordinator of youth development for the Buller region.
I am especially passionate about the people in my community, youth, music, social enterprise, conscious consumerism, science and mother nature.
My hobbies include DJing, yoga, volunteer work and learning.
My name is Jed from West Coast, probably the roughest most isolated and untapped region in NZ and we love it that way! I love to surf, climb and ski along with a few other things.
Just getting stoked off the environment is how I live the dream down here.
I studied my tourism degree in Wellington and now manage a camping ground in the picturesque Punakaiki.
